Meet
Lauren Showalter, LPC, NCC
I am a licensed professional counselor who provides counseling services for adolescents, families, and adults. I also teach mindfulness and meditation as a tool for wellness.
I have been working in the mental health field since 2009, and have been licensed since 2014. I received my master's degree from Marymount University in Arlington, VA. I received my bachelor's degree from Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg, VA. I currently live in Farmville with my husband, two daughters, and two cats. I enjoy traveling, being outside, watching my kids play sports, and helping in the community.
Counseling
Why counseling?
Therapy can be intimidating, but I like to look at it more as a journey towards wholeness and healing. I work with adults, teens, and pre-teens that may be struggling due to stress, life changes, depression, anxiety, mood disorders, or major challenges. Therapy can help you or your teen learn ways to cope, how to navigate hard times, gain insight, and work towards growth. It is also a chance to just be heard.
I am a licensed professional counselor and work from a client-centered approach which means that I meet folks where they are, with no judgement, and hope to partner with you or your teen on your road to healing. I use tools that pull from attachment approaches, positive psychology, mindfulness, cognitive behavioral therapy, play therapy, trauma-informed interventions, and somatic approaches.
I look forward to getting to know you or your teen to work together towards healing and growth.

Mindfulness and Meditation
What is mindfulness?
Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present in the moment and simply paying attention to oneself in a non-judgmental way. Studies have shown that mindfulness can help reduce stress, alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression, build self-awareness, develop emotional regulation skills, help one grow in self-compassion, feel more present, feel more connected (to ourselves and others), sharpen cognitive skills, and grow in overall mental, emotional, and spiritual health.
What is meditation?
Meditation is the action of taking charge of ones mind and becoming focused and relaxed. Meditation is taking mindfulness a step further and is a training of the mind. Meditation can help people access their positive qualities within and find calm awareness.
